THE Owain Glyndwr visitor centre in Machynlleth is to receive a £275,000 grant.

The money has come from Cadw and will be used to restore the Grade I-listed Parliament House, which is home of the centre.

The centre has also applied for £2.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
It has previously received a grant of £41,000 from Cadw which paid for a new heating and lighting system, and for the restoration of a mural of Glyndwr leading his warriors into battle.

Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has welcomed the announcement, saying: “The CADW grant is fantastic news for the Owain Glyndwr Centre and will be put to good use restoring Parliament House, which is a tremendous part of our heritage in Wales.

“Owain Glyndwr and the first ever Welsh Parliament in 1404 are a hugely important part of our Welsh history and it is right that we have a fitting facility in their honour.

“A dedicated group of enthusiasts have worked hard to keep the Owain Glyn Dwr Centre alive and have exciting plans to create a more modern centre to celebrate the life of possibly the greatest ever Welsh person.

“Three years ago I invited the Heritage Minister to visit Machynlleth and meet the members of the team and it’s been a long wait for them since, but I am delighted that CADW has awarded this grant of £275,000 which will go a long way in bringing their plans to life.”

The Prospective Liberal Democrat Wyn Williams has also welcomed the announcement, adding: “This is excellent news for the Owain Glyndwr Centre to help fund the restoration of Parliament House which is an important part of our history and heritage in Wales.

“Congratulations to the dedicated group of enthusiasts who produced excellent plans to create a facility to celebrate the life of a Welsh icon.

“This announcement is also pertinent to our culture and timed appropriately as it coincides with the Gwyl Machynlleth Festival currently taking place in Machynlleth.”
