THE vibrant and colourful music and dance of Latin America returns to Machynlleth on Saturday, September 4, with a music and dance extravaganza entitled “South American Celebration” taking place at Y Plas from 7.30pm.

The event is organised by Mind Out For Music, the group behind the El Sueno Existe Victor Jara festival  that takes place in Machynlleth every two years.

Victor Jara was a Chilean musician who was tortured and murdered following the military coup in Chile in 1973.

His life and music have become an inspiration for those seeking social justice and human rights throughout Latin America and the world, and the evening will be a celebration of traditional and contemporary music and dance from Latin America, from those inspired by Victor's story.

Italian songstress Silvia Balducci has delighted audiences for many years with her stirring renditions of the songs of Victor Jara and Violeta Parra.

This will be her third performance in Machynlleth, and on this occasion she is joined by Chilean charango player Fernando Toro.

Also playing are Rompiendo Fronteras, a recently formed band fronted by Bolivian multi-instrumentalist Milton Flores.

They play uniquely beautiful arrangements of revolutionary songs and ballads from all over Latin America.

Baila Peru are a seven-piece dance troupe, in traditional costumes, who will present two traditional Peruvian dance sequences entitled Saya and Anaconda.

Sergio Lagos, a Chilean, will present a homage to Salvador Allende, the assasinated president of Chile from the time of Victor Jara, and later in the evening there will be lively dance music from local band Cloud Cuckoo.

There will also be Latin American food served in the Plas cafe from 5.30pm, music starts at 7.30.
