FORMER Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik has denied reports he is planning to defect to Labour.
Lib Dem Opik, who lost his Montgomeryshire seat to Glyn Davies in May's election, dismissed speculation that he is planning to switch political allegiance.
It follows former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy also dismissing talk of his defection.
“I was a shocked as shocked to learn of my defection to the Labour party as Charles Kennedy was,” Opik told the County Times.
“It is very flattering that people are writing my future as well as my history but in future I recommend that people trust the County Times for accurate reports,” he joked.
"I have put my name down to be the Lib Dem candidate for mayor of London and that would be rather difficult if I was a Labour member,” he added.
“I am clearly more sympathetic to the Labour party than I am the Conservative party but I still hold the liberal beliefs that got me into politics in the first place.
“I have no plans whatsoever to defect!”
