NEWTOWN travel to bitter Mid Wales rivals Aberystwyth Town tonight (Friday) bidding to build on their opening day victory.
Striker Craig Whitfield enjoyed a goalscoring debut at Haverfordwest County last week and new manager Andy Cale could hand out several more debuts for the trip to Park Avenue.
Former TNS defender Michael Jackson has signed for the club with the 30-year-old set to start upon his arrival from Droylsden.
Jackson won the Welsh Premier with first domestic club Rhyl in 2004 before taking in spells at Welshpool Town and TNS before relocating to Iceland and signing for FC Prottur at the end of the 2007 season.
A brief spell at Caernarfon Town was followed by a return to the English non-league with Marine before skippering Droylsden last season.
Also arriving at the club is teenage defender Josh Evans who has opted for Newtown after his release by Shrewsbury Town.
Montgomery-based Evans broke into the reserve set-up in his final season with the Shrews having joined the club from school.
Manager Andy Cale said: “I think that with the addition of Josh and Mike that we have the making of a good squad.
“Mike has been around for a while and it was important that he wanted to join Newtown having done so well last season.
“Josh is a tremendous prospect who has come to Newtown following ringing endorsements from everyone who worked with him at Shrewsbury Town.”
Meanwhile Cale underlined how important it was for the club to get off to a winning start last weekend.
“There will be no easy games in the league this year and although we did have to defend for long spells at Haverforfwest I was pleased we took our chance when it came.
“It was a tight game but we were thrilled that Craig Whitfield could make such a big impact upon his debut while Sean Jones also put in a solid display upon his arrival from TNS.
“These players are talented and are keen to show what they can do at Newtown as they have not had a lot of football over the past year or two.”
The Robins will also look to end a Park Avenue hoodoo which has seen the club win just two from 16 games at the venue.
Last season Newtown lost 2-1 but Newtown secretary Durbridge insisted there was little to choose between the historic rivals.
Defender Craig Williams will get a chance to meet his old team-mates having left Latham Park in the summer. ”
Durbridge said: “Craig was a superb servant to the club from the age of 16 to when he left for Aberystwyth in the summer.
“He has a lot of friends here at Newtown and we look forward to catching up with him.”
