THEATR Powys and the Mid Powys Youth Theatre are one week into this year’s summer school and gearing up for their latest production.

This year young people will visit one of the most ground breaking and powerful plays of the 20th century; Blood Wedding by Spaniard Federico Garcia Lorca.

This summer school is the 10th collaborative production involving Theatre Powys and young people from the mid Powys community. Last year’s summer school was a huge success; an exploration of the ancient mythology surrounding the Greek House of Atreus in a highly original adaptation of Electra written and directed by Kristen Treen and Rhiannon Ashcroft, with original music by Ellen Jordan.

All three of these women are ex members of the youth theatre and Theatr Powys is delighted that they have returned to lead the young people through another intense three- week exploration and production.

Kristen Treen said:“Blood Wedding is potent and poetic. A love triangle cursed with desire, desperation and death. The play tells the story of a bride who must choose between the lover she individually desires and the one that society requires her to embrace. Mid Powys Youth Theatre will bring its usual amazing energy, powerful imagery and live music to the staging of this play.

"Based on actual news reports from the early 30s in rural Spain, the play was written by the young Lorca against the looming background of developing Civil War”.

Performances are August 26-28. Contact Theatr Powys on 01597 824444 or email theatre.powys@powys.gov.uk
