A PREFERRED route for the Newtown bypass will be announced by the end of summer, Wales’ Deputy First Minister has re-iterated.

Ieuan Wyn Jones was responding to a letter on the subject from the leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Nick Bourne AM.

In the letter Mr Bourne said: “I am writing to you to ask when the route for the proposed Newtown bypass is likely to be announced.

“I understand at the consultation meeting held last year that an announcement was expected by February 2010 which was later amended to be by this summer.

“This is causing concern in Newtown and I should be grateful for your confirmation in due course.”

Replying, Ieuan Wyn Jones said: “The appraisal of options for Newtown is now complete and I expect to make an announcement towards the end of the summer period.”

Following the exchange Mr Bourne told the County Times: “I welcome this statement and look forward to the Minister announcing his preferred route for this much needed bypass shortly.”
