A SCHOOLGIRL died after suffering a series of headaches at home.

An inquest yesterday was told Jessica Kirsty Nicholas, 15, had been feeling unwell for several weeks.

The Rhosnesni High School pupil took a turn for the worse on September 30 last year and at 8.30am on October 1 her mother Michelle called for an ambulance.

Jessica was admitted to the Maelor Hospital but died an hour later at 9.30am.

Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers confirmed to the hearing at Wrexham magistrates’ court that Jessica had died due to a post-viral syndrome.

He said: “Post-viral syndrome is very rare. When Jessica was taken to hospital they didn’t know what was wrong with her, it wasn’t obvious.

“I can’t criticise the hospital for not being able to save her – they really didn’t know what they were treating.

“It’s highly unlikely anything could have been done.”

Dr Rodgers concluded that the cause of death was brain swelling, blood clots in many parts of the body including the lungs and oesophagus and post-viral syndrome.

Dr Rodgers said he had ruled out the death being caused by Jessica playfighting with her brother or attending a foam party in Wrexham on September 29.

He added that no drugs were found in Jessica’s body.

The pathologist referred to Jessica’s stepfather Lee Hine, who died because of drug abuse.

He said: “We made sure there was nothing like that in Jessica.”

During the inquest Jessica’s mum Michelle told North East Wales coroner John Hughes she had had ‘months and months’ of people questioning her about the death.

Mr Hughes said any criticism of her ‘had no fact or foundation’.

Recording a verdict of death by natural causes, Mr Hughes said: “She had a very rapidly acting virus.

“The hospital couldn’t do anything for her.”

In a statement Mrs Nicholas described her daughter as a good, intelligent student who was caring and always looked after others.
