MONTGOMERYSHIRE County Councillor Russell George has been selected as the Conservative candidate for next year’s Welsh Assembly Election.

Cllr George was selected at a meeting at Welshpool Town Hall beating off the challenge of fellow county councillor Aled Davies and former parliamentary candidate Suzy Davies.

More than 250 Montgomeryshire electors attended the meeting where they were able to question and listen to the three candidates.

Cllr George, who took the nomination in the first round of voting with over 50 per cent of the ballot, said he is delighted to have been given the opportunity to stand in the election.

“If elected next year I will fly the flag for Montgomeryshire in Cardiff,” he said. “I want to be a responsible candidate focussed on finding solutions to the many problems we face.

“The Welsh Assembly Government has done little for Montgomeryshire and they need to be challenged on their priorities.”

Cllr George voiced his belief that transport, the Newtown bypass, unemployment and support for business are the key issues facing the county.
