MORE than £2 million of council tax went uncollected in Powys last year figures obtained by the GMB Union have revealed.

For all 22 councils in Wales uncollected council tax amounted to £43,752,000 in 2009/10. For the 326 councils in England the total uncollected amount was £1,065,939,397 in the same period.

Powys sits in eighth position in Wales with £2,168,000, while Cardiff is first with £6,310,000 uncollected in 2009/10.

However, Powys County Council says its tax collection rate is one of the best in Wales at 97.3 per cent, compared to a national average of 96.4 per cent.

PCC is also aiming to improve that percentage with a target of 97.5 per cent over the next four years as part of its Powys Change Plan.

Allan Garley, GMB regional secretary for Wales, said the amount of uncollected tax is not acceptable considering the pressure on public finances.

He said: “Uncollected local taxes in 22 councils in Wales amounted to over £43m in the last financial year.

“This level of uncollected local taxes can not be accepted at a time when there are deficits in the public finances which are giving rise to cuts in public services and job losses at a time of high unemployment.”

Just think what could be done with that £2 million, enough to keep schools open amongst other things, there does not seem to be an explanation of why these taxes have not been collected.
