THE Royal Welsh Showground near Builth Wells is gearing up for one of the biggest events in the Welsh calendar – The Royal Welsh Show.
The show attracted more than a quarter of a million people last year, and this year visitors can enjoy many entries competing in livestock competitions, a vast amount of trade stands and main ring entertainment every day from 8am to 8pm.
The show at Llanelwedd will be held between July 19 and 22 and has plenty of interest for all ages and offers a great range of attractions – both educational and entertaining.
At this year’s show some of the main attractions will be: Chariots of Fire, The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, The legendary JCB Dancing Diggers, The Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of The Royal Welsh, Meirion Owen and the Quack Pack, Titan the Robot, John Parker And The Royal Mail Coach and the Vintage Machinery Display.
There will also be new attractions at this year’s events which are thought to bring in many newcomers to the show. These include World Sheep Shearing and Woolhandling Championships, the UK Logging Championships and the opening of the new food hall.
There will also be livestock, featuring horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and goats, trade stands, horticulture, forestry, county pursuits, the sports arena, countryside care, the food hall, sheep shearing, sheepdog trials, produce and handicrafts, dairy produce, farriery and ornamental ironwork, poultry, rabbits, pets and cavies.
A record entry of 1,158 cattle, up by 216 on last year, has been announced for this year, they include 967 in the classes for beef breeds – an increase of 178 on 2009 – and 191 in the dairy section – 38 more than last year – the numbers ensuring there will be some hotly-contested challenges for the leading honours among cattle breeders.
