WELL it’s been a very frantic few weeks for me. Since having knee surgery four weeks ago, and having treatment everyday I am now very close to a return. The saying that the older you get the harder it gets is so true.
Since being sidelined we have kept pace with the leaders Columbus Crew in the Eastern Conference and now have a few home games coming up.
As with being on the sidelines I’ve been able to do a lot of coaching work and sessions with the academy in relation to my Uefa A licence work.
All the talk has been about the World Cup and shock after shock. What can you say about the England team and their performance. It’s been labelled disgraceful, lack of effort, embarrassing, and heartless. Well these are strong words, and a little unfair as players don’t go out there not to try or to perform badly – it’s just sometimes things don’t go your way.
With England I think that one of the biggest problems is that they have the best individual players but that doesn’t make the best team, and that’s what has happened this World Cup. It’s now back to the building stage for them and I think they should go the youth way! Just like Germany have done this time.
A lot is being made of Wayne Rooney not performing or scoring a goal in the whole tournament, but remember Lionel Messi didn’t score either, and as yet nor has Fernando Torres.
As bad as England played, you have to consider the performances of France and Italy. Neither made it past the group stages and both were in the World Cup final last time. Now that’s a poor World Cup.
Who will play the Netherlands in the World Cup final? Spain or Germany, but whoever it is it will be a memorable final.
Pre-season has started nearly for everyone back in the UK, with teams building their squads for the upcoming campaign.
Each year the out-of-contract pool of players gets bigger and bigger and it shows the way football is going.
The bigger clubs are running away from the rest and the others are cutting things in order to keep afloat. Manchester City’s new signing will be earning over £10 million a year, while other clubs are unable to buy players or end up in administration!
Finally, oh so close for Andy Murray in his bid to get to the Wimbledon final. Missing out in the semis was hard, but he will come back again.
