SO the poor England players were tired were they? Tired! Tired is not an excuse for playing with no ability, ambition, hunger or desire. Tired is an excuse for running out of energy 10 minutes before the end of extra time.
And how come if England's players are tired, that no other nation seems to be suffering. After all, it was Inter Milan and Bayern Munich who made it to the Champions League final. As Inter did the treble, you can only presume they played a lot of games during a very long, tough, demanding season.
Which brings me to my next point. Italy - out. England - out. Inter Milan's Champions League final starting 11 - Julio Cesar, Maicon, Walter Samuel, Lucio, Cristian Chivu, Esteban Cambiasso, Javier Zanetti, Goran Pandev, Wesley Sneijder, Samuel Eto'o, Diego Milito - number of Italians on the field, none.
Manchester United team that lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter final - Edwin van der Sar, Rafael, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic,Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Darron Gibson, Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney, Nani - number of English player on the field, three.
Barcelona team that lost to Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-final - Valdes, Dani Alves, Pique, Milito, Keita, Xavi, Toure Yaya, Busquets, Pedro, Ibrahimovic, Messi. Number of Spaniards on the field - five.
Spotting a trend here yet? But also note. Number of Argentinians - four. Number of Brazilians - five. Take into account the other five Champions League quarter finalists, and you've got most of the Argentina and Brazil starting 11.
So the number of foreigners flooding the game is clearly giving the bigger foreign nation's players vast tournament experience at the top level. But at the same time, despite English and Italian clubs doing well, few players are English or Italian.
It doesn't take to genius to work out what one of the major problems here is.
I for one, can't accept pathetic excuses like 'they were tired'. They are professional athletes who should have been prepared for this tournament all season. They should be able to play a few games in a month. If they can't, they shouldn't be there.
The simple fact of the matter is that despite the Premiership being the best league in the world, it is not bringing through world class English players. Look at the Argentina side and ask yourself, how many English players would get a game?
Rooney? Not on his World Cup 2010 showing. Terry? Unlikely, they've got better. Gerrard? Probably not, they are flooded with world class midfielders.
Dave Whelan, the Wigan chairman, made the point that perhaps the England team should be run by the Premier League, and not the FA. His claim was that the England team was being run by amateurs, when it needed professionals. Has he got a point? After the shambles of South Africa, you have to wonder...
