WORLD CUP BLOG: Just the small matter of Germany next...

FINALLY, as a fan of the England football team, something to smile about.

It's amazing the effect doing badly in the World Cup can have on a whole nation. Even across the border in Mid Wales (where admittedly there's a lot of English people) everyone seemed miserable after the Algeria game.

WIth reason I might add. It was probably the most abject England display of my lifetime. No passion, seemingly no ability, no invention, no clue.

It was like being in a timewarp, you half expected the camera to pan to the bench and see a tracksuited Graham Taylor mouthing 'do I not like that'.

And then when the fans had the 'audacity' to boo, we got Rooney mouthing off at the camera, moaning about the fans who had spent thousands of pound travelling half way across the world to watch him barely trying. They had every right to boo, and Mr Rooney needs to learn to keep his frustrations to himself.

Not one single player came out of that game in a good light. They all let themselves down, to a man. But not so on Wednesday against the Slovenians.

Okay, Slovenia's a small nation with no world class players. But they still needed beating, and England managed to put them away in some style. I say some style, Slovenia had too many chances for my liking, and England missed chances.

But they are through. Germany awaits. A useful, hardworking, youthful German side. Efficient if not full of flair, talented, well-drilled and organised.

But, and I think this is the most important part, a beatable German side.

England will have to be at their best, but the way the Serbians and the Ghanaians were able to get at them will give England plenty of hope. And England are a better side than Serbia and Ghana - the latter should have scored at least one.

So for the first time in my lifetime we're playing Germany in the World Cup finals with a real hope of victory. And if we do, probably Argentina awaits.....
