A SHOCK result has seen Lembit Opik ousted as Montgomeryshire’s MP after Conservative Glyn Davies overturned a huge majority to secure the seat.

Davies polled 13,976 votes, beating the Liberal Democrat incumbent’s 12,792 - a 13.2 per cent swing.

The other main gain saw Plaid Cymru’s Heledd Fychan move her party from fifth place to third, beating Labour’s Nick Colbourne into fourth.

A delighted Davies told the County Times the result was a “huge achievement”.

He said: “I think it’s a spectacular result and I remain in a state of shock. I had not expected such a result and congratulations to my team who have worked incredibly hard.”

A shell-shocked Lembit Opik said the defeat had come as a huge shock.

The eccentric Liberal Democrat had held the seat for 13 years.

He said: “If you stand for election, defeat is always a possibility and you have to respect that my Conservative opponent won fair and square and ran a very good campaign.

“I am surprised at the result, I did not expect it but it shows that life is an uncertain business.”

Full result:

Glyn Davies (Conservative) - 13,976

Lembit Opik (Lib Dem) - 12,792

Heledd Fychan (Plaid Cymru) - 2,802

Nick Colbourne (Labour) - 2,407

David Rowlands (UKIP) - 1,128

Milton Ellis (National Front) - 384

Bruce Lawson (Independent) - 324

Congratulations to the voters for uniting to take the right sensible decision to respect the dignity of parliament and the conduct of its members.

Lembits punishment for his celebrity lifestyle? Or an indictment of the lazy politics practiced by the Liberals? 'Vote for us or the tories get in' didn't do the trick. Maybe next time offer some policies instead, eh? Complacency got him in the end. We'll see how Glyn does, let's hope he does a better job than the last conservative we had. He'd have to be awful to be worse than him though.
