Big move to the Big Apple

WELL it has been a busy few weeks for me since my last column. Since then I have now moved to New York - after much talking and a long dragged out process I can now proudly say I am a member of the Red Bull franchise.

There have a number of rumours over the last few months about me joining them and leaving Toronto, and finally after it has happened everyone seems to have an opinion as to why I have moved.

Let me just say this, I knew back in November that I would be moving and no-one knows the real reasons except me - when I decide I will reveal the reasons and it might just shock a few people.

But for now I want to concentrate on the job ahead for me after joining NY. After meeting the manager Hans Bakke, Sven’s assistant at Man City, I was very impressed with his vision and focus for the season ahead and the plans moving forward.

There is a long-term plan and I’m so happy to be part of it. The squad has been together for a while and there is a stability here, which all teams need to be successful.

Since my trade here I have managed to play in a few friendly matches but none more high profile than the match against Brazilian giants Santos on Saturday. It was the opening of the Red Bull Arena, a soccer specific stadium, without doubt the best in the MLS - and the game was a cracker.

Kelly Rowland sang the national anthem and Winter Olympian Lindsey Vonn carried the match ball onto the pitch. Big name stars were in attendance - from Pele to music stars. It was a big event.

We played excellently and won the match 3-1, although I picked up a slight knock to my knee.

We now move forward with the start of the MLS season when we face Chicago at home.

I must say thanks to all the people who helped me and supported me in Toronto and I enjoyed my time there very much. I wish them every success in the future.

Our current CBA agreement has been made with the league and we can now move forward with starting the season. There have been positive steps forward and I think the league will be a lot better for it in the future.

Finally I have to say happy birthday to my son Milo whose birthday I missed. Sadly I was here in New York - but my thoughts were with you son!
