A NEW unitary development plan that will inform planning decisions in Powys for the coming years has been adopted by the County Council.

The Powys Unitary Development Plan is important to everyone who lives or works in Powys as it sets out the authority's planning policies and proposals for development and use of land in the county – excluding Brecon Beacons National Park – up to 2016.

Work on the plan started several years ago with a number of draft versions being published and then amended to reflect comments made during public consultation events throughout the county.

Board member for Planning, Councillor Wynne Jones said: “The adoption of the unitary development plan is culmination of years of hard work and sets out the County’s planning policies outside of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

“The new plan includes changes to housing and employment land allocations and has new or amended policies on affordable housing, flood risk and nature conservation. There are also revisions to general policies for development and relating to minerals and waste developments.”

Following the adoption of the Unitary Development Plan on Monday (March 1), the County Council will begin work on the preparation of the Powys Local Development Plan for Powys, excluding the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The Local Development Plan will provide policies for the development and use of land in the County for the 15 years beyond 2016. More information on development plans can be found online at http://www.powys.gov.uk
