POWYS County Council has expressed its concern at Tesco’s decision to open
its new Newtown store before completing vital traffic signal work.

The company opened the Pool Road store on Monday without fully testing and synchronising new traffic lights triggering traffic congestionin the town.

Board Member for planning, Councillor Wynne Jones said: “The company was
granted planning permission for the store with a legal agreement that it should not open to the public without completing work to the satisfaction of the council.

“Regrettably the company took the decision to open the store before the traffic lights were fully synchronised and operational. The decision, which was exacerbated by increased traffic to the new store and driverinexperience at the new junction, created congestion through the town.

“Our engineers have been working with the company’s consultants and monitoring the situation. Welsh Assembly Government officials will have the final say on any solution. We have been told that it may take some time before the new signals are operating at their optimum capacity and the overall situation improves.

“Some changes have already been made to improve flow through the town on the trunk road but access onto the main road remains an issue for a number of motorists.

“We will continue to work with the company and their specialists in an effort to improve the situation, but the opening of the store will inevitably generate thousands of extra vehicle movements and there will be congestion at times.”

The council would point the finger at tesco's. The truth is they're both to blame. Newtown's traffic problems date back decades, for PCC to give all the blame to Tesco is a joke. I live in Llanllwchaiarn, a 20 minute walk from Newtown, but if I wish to drive it could take me twice that. Powys County Council is killing Newtown off with it's incompetence, if this continues Newtown will be dead inside six months. This is just another way Powys County Council is failing it's residents!

Suggest Cllr. Jones and his cronies get down to Argos and buy item 119/3954 - a road play mat for £9.74 (currently has £3 off the price so don't hang around too long) and learn how to manage traffic issues because looking at the total mess the Council has done to Newtown over the past 10 or so years, lessons need to be learnt. The congestion in the town is here to stay and will not go away.Wake up man and do the right thing. Put the roundabout back on Pool Road to ease the congestion.

There was a perfectly good roundabout. So what do the Council do - insist on even more inefficient traffic lights to plague Newtown. It now takes an additional 10 minutes to reach the station from the new bridge. The stupidity of these people is beyond belief. 3 months delay to Tesco's opening and then this chaos. And what do the Council do - blame Tesco for the Council's stupidity!!
