Lembit raises secondary schools issue in parliament

THIS week in Parliament MP Lembit Opik tabled and Early Day Motion calling on the officers and councillors of Powys County Council to seek a solution which does not involve the closing of any schools or sixth forms.

The EDM states: “That this House notes the forthcoming consultation on the future of secondary school and sixth form provision in Powys; and calls on the officers and councillors of Powys County Council to seek a strategic solution which preserves the outstanding contribution of the existing schools and sixth forms without closing these facilities, while funding creative approaches to fulfil the financial and educational challenges facing Powys.”

Speaking about why he raised the EDM, Opik commented: “I've decided to raise the issue of potential school closures in Parliament, to present a measured and clear official view. It's worth noting that the real responsibility to make the decision rests with the Councillors and it's important that I and other political activists respect that.
“However, I do believe it's in order for me to lobby and represent the public mood to those Councillors in the hope that this might help inform the debate.

“I personally do not believe that the Council will vote to close our secondary schools in Powys. But there is a risk to Sixth Forms and that's really the area where the lion's share of the debate will occur.

“Let's keep cool and make sure the discussions are informed rather than heated. It's the best way to seek a genuinely sensible solution to the educational and funding challenges facing the local authority and us as a community which cares about its education system.

“If you have concerns about the schools proposals and would like to speak to me personally then I would be very happy to hear from you.

"Please don’t hesitate to call my constituency office in Newtown on 01686 625527 about any concerns you may have.”
