WITH Newtown and Welshpool sidelined, Llanfair Caereinion had an ideal opportunity to capitalise against Ruthin, in the first division of the North Wales Ladies’ League.
However Llanfair were blown away and were overwhelmed 7-1, with the home side scoring a consolation goal through Kate Ellis.
The only silver lining for a depleted Llanfair was the return of Leanne Davies following a serious injury.
Davies said: “It was our first game back and it showed while Ruthin were a lot sharper and deserved to win.”
Neil Godsell starred with a hat-trick as Newtown Men demolished derby rivals Ludlow in the first division of the Bodykraft men's West Midlands League.
Further goals from Dave Hamer, Richard Jones, Dave Jenkins and Tom Hillidge completed the drubbing, with Danny Robertson replying.
Godsell said: “It was a good win and it’s always nice to beat Ludlow.”
Meanwhile Radnor were awarded the points in the first division of the South Wales Ladies’ League after Gowerton failed to raise a team for the fixture.
Meanwhile Kington were comfortable 6-0 winners at home to Llanishen, to remain in sight of the leading pack in the second division.
Lucy Morgan blasted Kington ahead before Jenny Layton doubled the tally from a penalty corner.
Youngsters Becky Player and Emma Bryan pounced on loose balls to put the game beyond doubt, before Ruth Alexander fired home.
Fittingly the outstanding Layton completed her brace to finish the scoring.
Meanwhile Presteigne were 2-1 winners over Montgomery in the Shropshire Ladies’ League at Welshpool.
An exciting derby contest saw both sides create chances, with Montgomery belying their lowly standing.
However Montgomery were undone by the electric pace of winger Carrie Tomkins, who crossed for Jess Goodwin to break the deadlock at the start of the second-half.
Montgomery hit back and exerted pressure on the visiting defence and eventually levelled through Wendy Evans.
Presteigne were not to be denied and with just minutes remaining Goodwin found Rita Tomkins to slot home the decider.
