A POWYS County Council board member has demanded an inquiry into how a confidential report on Secondary Education Modernisation was leaked to the press.
The radical report, which outlines several models for the future of education in the county, including the closure of up to six high schools, was leaked by the Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate, Glyn Davies.

Now councillor Les Davies, leader of the Liberal Democrat group and Deputy Leader of Powys County Council, has called for an inquiry.

Cllr Davies said: “I am so angry that this has happened. The upset this has caused to schools, pupils and parents is quite unacceptable.

Cllr Davies added, “I want to reassure every parent that no decisions have been made. Also that nothing in Secondary Education will change until there has been a full consultation process to establish the preferred way forward.”

A spokesman for the council confirmed that it had received a request to carry out an inquiry, which is being considered.

Glyn Davies defended his decision to leak the document as the matter was so important it merited public debate: “I am very surprised that a councillor seems more concerned about the leak than the issue.

“There are 3,060 people who have joined a Facebook site and not one has mentioned the leak. All people care about is the impact on their community and the importance of the issue.”
