Thanks to the dogged determination of a local campaign group skaters and riders in Pembrokeshire will have their wish of a high quality skatepark in Haverfordwest granted.

Pembrokeshire County Council last week approved plans for an impressive 50 metre by 30 metre skatepark on Picton Playing Fields which the Haverfordwest Skatepark Association (HSA) has been pushing for over the last two-and-a-half years.

Members of the HSA, a registered charity, have raised more than £50,000 for the scheme and are preparing for a final push of fundraising.

“It’s definitely exciting, and feels a bit more real now there is a definite end,” said HSA chairman Simon Griffiths.

“A few people were doubtful that it would ever happen but this has reinvigorated them, we have had a lot of positive feedback.”

Suitable for skateboards, inline skates and bikes and all abilities, from beginner to professional, the concrete park, designed by Maverick, will attract enthusiasts from across the county and beyond.

HSA secretary and a driving force behind the team, Alison Turner, said much of the group’s success was down to determination, stubbornness and the hard work of the dedicated team who prepared background information.

“We really appreciate the local support, over 1,000 people canvassed were in support, that’s 96% in favour, not just skaters but others who could understand the need too.

“All our energy now is going into grant applications and fundraising. We are really keen to keep it a community based project and every bit helps,” added Alison.

The park will cost around £325,000 to £350,000 and the HSA will raise all the money itself.
