EFFORTS to raise money for renovation work at Builth’s Strand Hall have been boosted by the town’s rugby club.
The town’s rugby club has pledged to donate their remaining home gate receipts to the Strand Hall committee so the extensive renovation work can continue.
Mike Price, chairman at Builth RFC, said he was happy to help: “The Strand Hall is an important part of the town and the rugby club wish to support it.
“We decided we would donate the money from our six remaining home games.
“The Strand has served the community well for many years and the club is getting alongside the rest of the town in ensuring it continues to do so.”
Renovation work continues at the iconic Strand Hall. In August the committee looking after the hall received a grant of £250,000 from the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund, which was launched in 2002 to address the environmental costs associated with aggregate extraction in Wales.
Phase one of the renovation work began in December, with a new roof, windows, insulation and rewiring expected to be completed by autumn.
Jeff York, chair of the Strand Hall committee, was delighted with the support from the town’s rugby club: “It is great news, and incredibly generous of the rugby club to support the work in this way.
Mr York said the committee is now seeking new funding and expect to find out about one application in February.
He said: “We are going full steam ahead trying to raise the money to keep the wheels moving but it is a constant battle. A fundraising group has been set up and we have been fortunate to receive £96,000 from the town council, but we must continue raising money to ensure we can complete this fantastic project.”
County councillor Avril York said: “The work that is being done for the Strand Hall is a reflection of how passionate people are about the building here in Builth.
“It is wonderful to see such effort and kind gestures.”
A fundraising event will be held on Friday, March 12 at the Lion Hotel, Builth Wells and will include a promise auction and the first draw of a new 200+ club.
