CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a Tesco store in Machynlleth have been delayed after the Welsh Assembly issued a holding directive on the application.

The supermarket giant’s proposal to build a store in the town has polarised views, with fervent opponents of the plans even having their premises pelted with eggs.

The application was intended to go before Powys County Council’s planning committee together with a proposal for an extension to the town’s Co-op store this week.

However, neither went before the committee, due to the Tesco application being subject of a holding directive and the meeting itself being cancelled due to the weather. It is understood that planners had raised concerns over the transport impact element of the application.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) issued a holding objection to the Tesco application for Machynlleth, issuing a direction on the council not to determine the application until they have had sufficient time to consider the revised information by the applicant on transport issues.”
