IT was a very exciting week as the Philadelphia Union formed and became the newest member of the MLS.
They had to pick 10 players, one from 10 teams with the others avoiding losing any players. No players from Toronto were chosen, although I am sure there will be lots of changes before next year.
The league promises to be even more exciting this year, but the draft in January and off-season trades will put teams in good standing for the new season.
Looking further ahead the addition of Montreal and Vancouver will be great for Canadian soccer and its growth.
The foundations need to be set properly and there is still a lot of work for this to happen so it avoids losing all the best players to Europe at an early age.
I went to watch Wales v Australia on Saturday in Cardiff and have to say it ended disappointingly as the Aussies won comfortably in the end.
It was also a big derby weekend as Chelsea saw off Arsenal, Liverpool got out of their rut against Everton and sadly Wolves lost at home to Birmingham. Mick has faced facts that they are in a relegation battle, but January will be key with hopefully some new signings to help them survive.
And then the small match between Barcelona and Real Madrid. A great advert for football, with chances, saves, sending offs and the odd goal as Barcelona won the match in the end.
I have to mention the agent fees that were published this week and it was no surprise that Manchester City blew everyone out of the water. It really is true, the rich are getting richer and the poor poorer!
Such is the way with football at the moment with trying to find clubs or win contracts.
I was speaking to my old team mate Rohan Ricketts the other day. Rohan left Toronto earlier in the year but clearly is still not happy by the way he was treated and is going to put the record straight in the future as to the reasons.
Sometimes when you leave places it’s better to just move on and say nothing but Rohan has never been one to just lie low. It’s important he gets back to playing as soon as possible as he is still only 27.
My pre-season training programme has started and is going well. It’s about a slow build up to my return to Toronto in February. Well if the CBA can be agreed that is...
