Llanfyllin car parts company saved - at the expense of Coventry plant

A LLANFYLLIN company which supplies parts for the car industry has been saved, following months of uncertainty.

Last December Stadco, in Llanfyllin, blamed the recession for making 73 of its 153 workers redundant and it was feared that, following a strategic review of its business, the factory may have to close.

But the 80 remaining jobs have now been safeguarded following news that the company has instead opted to close its plant in Coventry.

Stadco has also confirmed that 86 new jobs will been created at their other plants – Llanfyllin, Shrewsbury, Birmingham and West Brom.

“This is wonderful news for Llanfyllin as Stadco is the life-line of the town and had it of closed it would have had a devastating effect on our economy,” said Llanfyllin County Councillor, Peter Lewis.

“There has been lots of doom and gloom surrounding the future of the factory so to hear this news, although bad for the people of Coventry, is fantastic for us, especially just before Christmas.

“It just goes to show what a really good factory we have here in Llanfyllin. It is modern and adaptable to change and as a result jobs here have been safeguarded.”

Glyn Davies, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Montgomeryshire, said: “The jobs and income that Stadco provides is hugely important to the economy of Llanfyllin. For months there has been a dark cloud hanging over Llanfyllin as Stadco has been reviewing its entire business. Llanfyllin has been ‘holding its breath’ hoping that the plant would be saved,” he said.

“We don’t yet know precisely how many jobs are to be moved to Llanfyllin from Coventry, but it’s clear that a substantial workforce will continue to inject income into the local economy.

A spokesperson from Stadco added: “After a thorough strategic review of its business, Stadco, a leading supplier of body-in-white services and facilities for the global automotive industry, has regretfully identified that it must consider the closure of most of its manufacturing business at its  Coventry plant.”
