Welshpool celebrate against Llanfair

WELSHPOOL took the derby spoils in their North Wales Ladies’ League first division clash with Llanfair Caereinion at the Flash.

The first half was a stalemate with both teams having few chances, while the contest was also held up after Llanfair’s Leanne Davies suffered a broken jaw, which saw her taken to hospital.

Welshpool then picked up the pace and dominated the second-half with many chances before Ceri Chapman netted from a penalty corner and Caroline Jones completed the hosts’ hard-fought win.

Meanwhile Newtown Ladies made progress in the North Wales League Cup with a 2-1 first round win at Wrexham.

A superb individual effort from Katie Griffiths gave Town the advantage and despite a reply from the hosts Newtown’s place in the second round was secured with Clare Bonsall rifling home.

Elsewhere Radnor Ladies made all the headlines in South Wales after thrashing a previously unbeaten first division leaders Sue Noakes 5-1.

Radnor dominated from start to finish, with left winger Marie James rewarded for her impressive display with a first-half brace, with Hayley Price extending the home side’s advantage.

Radnor continued to battle hard in the second half, with Gwen Samuel and Lindsay Jones teaming up to slice through the visitors defence, with Samuel and Jones scoring a goal a piece.

Meanwhile an outstanding team performance from Kington earned them a 3-0 victory over Cardiff Athletic in division two.

Jenny Layton’s goal, created by Emma Turner, put Kington ahead at the break before wing Catherine Jones set-up Layton‘s second.

Player of the match Rachel Venables deservedly sealed the victory, with a run around the Cardiff goalkeeper to slot home a third goal.

Cardiff hit back but Kington were indebted to a superb battling display from defenders Sian Morgan, Hannah Milde, Laura Morris and Rachel Betterton.

Meanwhile Presteigne ran riot in an 8-1 mauling of Wem in the Shropshire Ladies’ League, with Jess Goodwin plundering four goals.

Deb Evans chipped in with goals either side of the break, while Rita Tomkins and Sioned Price goals completed a comfortable afternoon for Presteigne.

Elsewhere Montgomery were undone by a late goal in a 2-1 defeat at Market Drayton, with Becky Randell levelling for the Welsh side, who went on to dominate before being caught out at the death.

In the first division of the Bodykraft West Midlands Men’s League Newtown lost out 5-2 at Stafford, despite two goals from Gareth Preece.

James Gillingham led the home side to glory with a brace, while Ben Dudley, Ben Holland, Steve Sudale and Simon Williams goals ensured a long trip home for Town.
