WELSHPOOL were comfortable 7-1 winners over Porthmadog in the opening round of the North Wales League Cup.


Welshpool progressedinto the second round with ease thanks to hat-tricks from Jacqui Loxam and Caroline Jones (pictured).


Ellie Jones completed the drubbing before the visitors managed a late consolation to blot the home side’s copy book.


Llanfair Caereinion survived a brusing encounter at second division Ardudwy to claim a place in the second round.


However the game was marred by injuries which brought about the premature end to the contest with Debbie Barker and Kate Ellis both forced off after sustaining blows to the head respectively.


Earlier, Ellis had starred with a brace for Llanfair with further goals from Delyth Astley, Karen Pugh and Iris Huxley making the game safe.


Debutant Annie Jones added her name to the tally with fellow youngster Samantha Tudor completing the rout.


A bruised and battered Llanfair Caereinion side then travelled to Cardiff Athletic in the first round of the Welsh Cup and crashed 5-0.


Two goals apiece from Kate Fergus, Sally Park and Abby MacArthur sentenced Llanfair to first round defeat.


However spokesperson Debbie Barker insisted: “Considering our selection problems many a side would have conceded so we are proud that we went down there and gave a good account of ourselves.”


Elsewhere Newtown will have to replay their match against Ruthin after a waterlogged pitch forced the cancellation of their first round tie.


Kington went down 2-1 in the second division of the South Wales Ladies League in a re-arranged match at Chepstow.


A first-half goal from Emma Bryan was not enough to stop Kington losing with Pat Morris’ brace swinging the game in the Gwent side’s favour.


Emma Turner was joined by Lucy Morgan and Ruth Alexander in rescricting the hosts chances while valiant attempts at goal from young Beth Watson and Sian Morgan were not enough to save Kington.


In the Bodykraft Mens West Midlands League, Newtown’s men fine run of form was ended abruply as two goals from Brad Bellingham secured Wednesbury a 2-1 victory at Maldwyn.


David Hamer reduced the arrears but it was not to be for Newtown who have now consolidated after struggling for players at the start of the season.


In the South Powys Badgers League, honours ended even in the derby between Radnor and Presteigne with Kirsty Prosser’s strike cancelled out by Sioned Price of Presteigne.


n Nine Montgomeryshire girls will take part in the Welsh Hockey Union’s regional academy after wowing selectors at last weekend’s performance centre tournament hosted by Wrexham Hockey Club.


Llanidloes High School is well represented with Daisy Smith, Lauren Evans, Sophie Rees, Beth Lewis, Alice Mills and Lucy Thompson stepping up while Newtown’s Megan Davies is joined by Welshpool pair Lucy Davies and Lucy Freeman.
