Parking charges will hit your quality of life

YOUR recent report on the uproar concerning imminent car park charges in Llanfyllin and Llanfair Caereinion failed to mention an aspect of the issue which will almost certainly affect pedestrians as well as drivers - increased pavement obstruction.

In Welshpool we do not have any free car parks - and for years it has been the practice of many local drivers to use the pavements to park their vehicles. Visitors are frequently shocked to see a rash of cars blocking the pavement outside the church in Raven Street, just over the hill in Mount Street or dotted round the pavements at the bottom of Brook Street. The suburban pavements are even worse affected as this illegal habit is now part of the local culture since it is completely unpenalised by the authorities.

So residents of communities in the firing line of losing your free car parks take heed - your quality of life is likely to take a hit not just in the pocket!
