2,341 wind turbines = 1 nuclear power plant

We all now know that there are plans for an astounding number of wind turbines awaiting delivery to the Mid-Wales area.

I believe the figures are now up to 600 of them.

Assuming they are all 2 Mega-Watt V.80 Vestas turbines, a common turbine for developers to choose , with each one of them being an optimistic average 30 per cent efficient and lasting for 20 years, they will generate the equivalent average amount of electricity over their lifetime of just a quarter of the average output of just one average UK nuclear power station over its  lifetime.

Nuclear does, of course, last twice as long as a wind turbine and is more than twice as efficient. In fact, according to BWEA and British Energy website data, I have calculated that you need 2,341 wind turbines to produce the same average power, over the same lifetime as one average nuclear power station.

The resources needed to do this are scandalous.

A new connection into the national electricity grid is required for the new wind farms.
I have heard that Carno is the centre point for the inter-connecting power lines as it is pretty much in the middle of them all.

Based on the number of wind farm planning applications known for the area, I reckon that Carno will need to say goodbye to a sizeable area of its neighbouring countryside as the pylons, transformers and interconnection system for several hundred mega-watts of new wind turbines are going to be massive. I would guess at an area of say half a kilometre by half a kilometre - quarter of a million square metres, roughly equivalent to 35 FIFA sized football fields of 7000 sq metres. Perhaps National Grid will have more accurate figures to save the local people getting unnecessarily worried? Maybe you would like to ask them?
