A project in Llanfyllin, working alongside the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, has received a National Lottery grant of £10,000.

A year-long project led by Llanfyllin Shed and Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust has been awarded a National lottery grant of £10,000, with the project set to launch on April 1, 2024.

The initiative, titled ‘Learn and Build – Working Together for Nature’ will see the skills of Llanfyllin Shed combined with the knowledge of the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, to promote the protection and conservation of local wildlife and habitats.

Gillian Johnson from Llanfyllin Shed said, “We are eternally grateful to the National Lottery, especially to those people who play each week.  Without these grants many small local projects would not get off the ground.”

Originally called the Men’s Shed and opened in 2019, Llanfyllin Shed began as a facility to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practise skills and enjoy making and mending, and help generate social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge.

With skills put to use at the shed, the ‘Learn and Build’ scheme will see those skills used to help other community groups. It will involve one of the Wildlife Trust Officers promoting and setting up a programme of monthly awareness raising events with various local groups, such as schools and the scouts.

OTHER NEWS:

They will demonstrate the various animal shelters they make, including ones that house owls birds insects and hedgehogs, to help participants build their own box. Each participant will learn how to care for nature and their environment, as well as gaining hands on experience of basic woodworking skills.

Organisers of the scheme have said that they believe the project has the potential to reach hundreds of local people, with the aim being to give everyone involved a “sense of community, local pride and belonging”, while making positive changes for the environment and conservation.

The Shed meets weekly Wednesday and Friday 10am to 2pm, with the Crafty Hub meeting on Tuesdays from 10am to 3pm.
