Machynlleth Rugby Club has shared a tribute to their vice chairman Martin Hughes after he died aged 63 last month following a short illness.

Past and present members of Clwb Rygbi Machynlleth were among the many who attended Mr Hughes' funeral at St Peter’s Church on Friday, March 8.

Having spent many years as a fan of the club, Mr Hughes filled several roles on the club’s committee before eventually becoming its vice chairman, a role he remained in until he died on February 22.

“It's with great sadness that the club reports the passing of Martin Hughes our much-loved vice chairman," a spokesperson for the rugby club said.

“Martin was a supporter of Clwb Rygbi Machynlleth for many years, serving on the committee in various roles and was currently our vice chairman. 

"Along with Martin, his wife Sian served as treasurer, his son Mathew played, and brother Teddy has also served the club as player, coach and committee member.

“Martin was always there when any help was needed around the club, his enthusiasm was infectious. 

"He loved his rugby and rarely missed a home game. A keen sports fan, he supported Liverpool FC and also had a soft spot for the Wolves. 

“Martin was also a keen hill walker, along with his faithful spaniel Bo, they would set out with the local walking group as often as they could, usually enjoying a well-earned pint at the end.

“Martin loved music and was a massive Queen fan, we will miss him shout ' Turn it up Lil' in the clubhouse.   

“Of all the things Martin loved, the thing he loved most was his family, his wife Sian, daughters Lynn and Cara, son Mathew, daughter in law Jenny, son-in-law Nick and all his six granddaughters.

"To them and all his extended family Clwb Rygbi Machynlleth would like to extend its sincere condolences at this time of great sadness for the family.”

Machynlleth Bowling Club also paid tribute to their former bowler and regular Montgomeryshire County tourist.

"A true gentleman and friend to all who knew him," the club said. "Martin will be greatly missed".

Mr Hughes’ funeral was followed by a commemoration to him at the clubhouse.
