A Powys town council is crowdfunding to buy a “vibrant” community field from a Welsh MP.

Llanyfyllin Town Council are crowdfunding to buy Cae Bodfach Field from former Mayor and Clywd South MP Simon Baynes who is set to stand in neighbouring North Shropshire at the next general election.

Mr Baynes who is the former owner of Bodfach Hall has previously given the town council first refusal to buy the field that has been leased to the town for a peppercorn rent for the past 10 years.

The town council has been tying to find ways to raise the field which was valued at £80,000. The council has now set up a crowdfunding appeal for £5,000 to help reach their goal.

In a statement released by the council they said: “Cae Bodfach Field is more than just a green space; it's a vibrant part of Llanfyllin, deeply integrated into the fabric of our community.

“Heavily utilised for local recreation, from dog walking and enjoying nature, to families revelling by the river and the bike track, it's a crossroads where nature meets community spirit.”

They added that the space is “utilised by groups like BRACE, Llanfyllin Community Initiative, and Arts Connection, the field hosts events such as Apple Day, Community Festivals, and Bike Track events, enriching our cultural and social landscape”.

The council has said its “vision is to develop it into a multipurpose town park for all ages, fostering recreation, wellbeing, and biodiversity, while supporting the local economy and ecological awareness.

“Cae Bodfach Field isn't just a place; it's a commitment to our community's future, where wildlife conservation is as important as the smiles it brings to those who visit.”
