BANK holiday Sunday (May 28) saw tractors descend on the home of the Evans family at Maesglyn, Meifod, for the annual Montgomeryshire Vintage Club’s tractor run.

Head of the family and route plotter, Milton Evans, had decided to carry on with the run although his wife, Meg, was recovering from a recent operation and with some key club officials missing.

This year the vintage club had nominated the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen to receive the proceeds from the tractor run.

Starting at 10am the tractor drivers were club members but there were also some visitors from the surrounding Montgomeryshire area, as well as Shropshire, Herefordshire and Merionethshire.

From the farm the parade of tractors followed Milton in his Massey Ferguson 135 to drop down into the Meifod Valley to the traffic-lighted junction at Newbridge, working their way around the lanes to drop down within sight of the late 17th century single-arched bridge that spans the river and the village of Dolanog.

Here the tractors weaved their way uphill to go off road through a private 500-acre estate to emerge back onto the double track B4395 heading for Pont Llogel. Over the narrow bridge to climb through the village continuing for a mile before the tractors turned right back towards Dolanog.

In the village the convoy turned left to drop down through the stone houses to cross the ford through the River Vyrnwy to emerge back onto the B4382.

Encircling round to Pontrobert and back into the Meifod Valley, the tractors headed towards their final destination, working their way along the hedge-lined lanes and across freshly silaged fields to pick up the farm track to climb up the Golfa to take in the beautiful vistas at the finish at Welshpool Golf Club.

Here the drivers were treated to much-needed food and drink after a hot day in the driving seat before making for home. The Evans family and the Montgomeryshire Vintage Club would like to thank all participants and landowners for making the tractor run possible.
