Mid Wales’ largest town will not be hosting a carnival this year for the fourth year running due to a lack of committee members and volunteers to hold the event.
Newtown Carnival organisers have announced “with very heavy hearts” that the popular event will no longer take place as planned in 12 weeks’ time on Saturday, June 10.
Jen Reynolds, chairperson, said: “The absence of the carnival will be felt throughout the community which has been going on for over a hundred years."
The committee said there were not enough people who could help run the carnival in time for June's planned event despite posting an appeal for volunteers on social media on February 28.

“Sadly, organisers said there were not enough committee or volunteers to hold the event for the fourth year in succession.

“The absence of the carnival will be felt throughout the community which has been going on for over a hundred years.
“We can only hope that over the next few months we can get more people on board and make plans for June 2024.”
Newtown’s first illuminated bike ride – the Bike Festival of Lights - coincided with the town’s Christmas lights switch-on in November to raise money for the Carnival Trust after last year’s event was cancelled due to a lack of funding and volunteers.
