A new litter picking hub has opened in Llanidloes which allows people, community groups and businesses to borrow litter picking equipment to clean up their local area.

The Litter Picking Hub is now available in The Hanging Gardens café offers locals all the equipment needed to carry out a safe clean-up and keep their community looking beautiful. This includes litter pickers, hi-vis vests, rubbish bags and hoops.

To celebrate the launch of the litter picking hub, a clean-up event took place on Sunday, February 26, in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy, The Hanging Gardens and Powys County Council.

Staff, volunteers and members of the community were the first to use the free litter picking kit from the Hub and clean up the local area, including some young people working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

OTHER NEWS:

People can either book litter picking kit by sending an email to activities@thehanginggardens or via the Powys Council website - search Volunteer Litter Picking - which lists all of the litter hubs in the county.

The Hanging Gardens in Bethel Street is also offering a drop-in litter picking service, where people can just pop into the café to borrow a litter picker for the day. Equipment is available to borrow from 9am to 3pm on Tuesday to Saturday.

The litter picking hubs have been set up by Keep Wales Tidy as part of their Caru Cymru initiative. Caru Cymru - a Welsh phrase meaning 'love Wales' - is an inclusive movement led by Keep Wales Tidy and local authorities to eradicate litter and waste.

Jodie Griffith is Keep Wales Tidy's Powys Project Officer. She said: “We’re delighted to welcome The Hanging Gardens to our litter picking hubs family here in Powys.

"Locals can borrow litter picking equipment from the café for free to help keep Llanidloes litter free.

"We encourage individuals, businesses and groups to make good use of these new facilities to play a part in improving their local environment.”

Caru Cymru has received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government
