A COMMUNITY group in Presteigne says a new premises it has secured for the charity shop side of the business has “exceeded all expectations”.

Presteigne and Norton Community Support (PNCS) feared at the end of 2022 that The Warehouse, which it operates as a charity outlet, was going to be lost to the local community after the property where it was previously homed was put on the market.

The Warehouse sells furniture and all manner of household goods, plus menswear, DIY items, books and much more. That business has grown in recent years to be a major source of funds for the charity and was facing potential closure if suitable alternative premises could not be found.

Options were very limited in a small town like Presteigne. The old premises was ancient, poorly lit, cold and draughty, but was in the centre of town, and had built up a very loyal local customer base.

The search was on for a new home and, thankfully, a property on the local industrial estate became available.

Although it was not exactly in the middle of town, it appeared to be a viable alternative. By the beginning of December a lease had been agreed and the arduous task of relocating began. The main bulk of the move took place just before Christmas, after some preparation and painting at the new building, and the business reopened on January 3.

There was some trepidation, with PNCS chiefs concerned whether people would make the effort to come the half a mile or so from the town centre.

“By the end of January, there was a huge sigh of relief,” said Richard Wells chairman of Presteigne and Norton Community Support.

“The new business has exceeded all expectations. It has been busy every single day, and sales are already noticeably higher than at the old premises.

“Visitors can park right outside, so it is easier for people dropping off donations or collecting their bargain buys. Also, many visitors have commented that the property is bright and airy and much more inviting. It is the closest thing that Presteigne has to a department store.

“PNCS is very grateful to the people of Presteigne and the surrounding area for their fantastic support.”

Since 1997 PNCS has provided transport for residents of the local community to hospital and other medical appointments, the cost of which is subsidised by the income from two charity shops, a small shop in the High Street selling ladies and children’s clothing, toys, etc, and The Warehouse.

The Warehouse provides a valuable source of affordable items for the community, raises substantial funds for the charity and also reduces the amount of items going to landfill.
