A number of Powys residents have been recognised in the New years honours list.

Four people from the county have been awarded various honours for their years of service – with one OBE, two MBEs and a BEM.

Ian Green, the chief executive of the Terrence Higgins Trust, who is from Builth Wells, said he was “thrilled and delighted” with the OBE he was awarded for his work at the trust – which is the UK's leading HIV and sexual health charity.

“I’m thrilled and honoured to receive an OBE in recognition of my work in charity and public health," said Mr Green.

“As someone living with HIV, my work is much more than just ‘a job’ and I have gladly invested time, energy and passion in order to drive the change for those affected by HIV and poor sexual health.”

Meanwhile Dr Andy Raynsford, who has a practice in Llandrinio, was awarded the British Empire Medal as part of his work in the community, as a part of his practice but also as the cluster lead GP for North Powys.

“It is truly a privilege to be able to serve the people of Llanidloes and Mid Wales both in my role as GP and working with Powys THB at G.P Cluster level,” said Dr Raynsford.

“I am delighted to receive this honour in recognition of the whole team at Arwystli Medical Practice and my G.P Cluster and Health Board colleagues”

Welshpool’s Karen Williams was also awarded an MBE for “services to the Administration of Justice and Charity” in her role as Administrative Officer in Welshpool Magistrates’ Court, HM Courts and Tribunals Service.

Major Derek John Munro, 61, was awarded an MBE for his work as Cadet Executive Officer for the Gwent and Powys Army Cadet Force (ACF).

Major Munro became CEO of Powys ACF in 2007. This appointment coincided with a ‘once in a generation’ reform of Wales’ ACF, resulting in significant change to staff structures and processes and has been praised for his fine leadership in dealing with the many challenges including his innovative solutions Throughout the pandemic that ensured “cadet wellbeing and training opportunities were maintained”.

In addition to his normal duties, Major Munro has raised in excess of £100,000 by “judicious management of the spare capacity in his Headquarters location”.
