Welshpool Town Council is to hold a Fanzone at the Town Hall for World Cup games this winter.

A group space where people can watch the Welsh games together, the council is inviting families to view the football matches in the upcoming 2022 World Cup in the Town Hall.

Live footage of the Wales games against USA, Iran and England, on November 21 at 7pm, November 25 at 10am and November 29 at 7pm respectively, will be screened using a projector.

The town council raised the issue of alcohol and the potential difficulties of handling a rowdier, inebriated crowd.

Cllr Nick Howells said: “If guys have been drinking beforehand and already had four or five pints, and then they have the four pints in the fan zone, what security arrangements will we have as we know football fans can be a little bit lairy sometimes?

“We, as councillors, are not allowed to act as security guards.”

Councillors agreed that alcohol should not be banned from the venue, but agreed that it should be promoted as a family event to encourage a more diverse crowd and promote it as a safe space for families to watch the match.

Cllr Alison Davies said: “If you want to get hammered in the pub, that’s a different thing to going to a family event and you’ll come to a family event for different reasons.”

The council added that it had carried out a test of the equipment and whether the town hall would be viable to hold such an event.

Cllr Ben Gwalchmai, said: “Great meeting and test, we have a default position where we can use a projector, we have the bare minimum we need to make it work and we know it’s viable.”
