A man from Llandrindod Wells will be facing the infamous conundrum as he is set to make an appearance on the iconic game show Countdown.

John Aziz, a musician from the Mid Wales town, is featuring as a contestant on Channel 4’s Countdown from today (Tuesday, August 23).

Mr Aziz will face the letters and numbers rounds for the first time today – but whether he will continue onto other days must remain a secret for now lest today's episode be ruined.

“I have wanted to appear on Countdown since I was a child, as it has been my favourite TV show or one of my favourite TV shows for my entire life since the days of Carol Vorderman and Richard Whiteley,” said Mr Aziz.

The Llandrindod resident first auditioned for the show in April 2022, solving some anagrams and maths puzzles over the phone.

It was not until May 2022 that he found out he would be appearing on the show and would have to race against the dreaded countdown clock.

On the day of filming and making the episode, Mr Aziz said: “Filming the show was one of the best experiences of my life.

“I got an opportunity to meet so many larger than life figures such as Rachel Riley, Susie Dent, and Colin Murray.

“They were pleasant and interesting to talk to, and it is very surreal meeting someone who you have known about from afar for many years.

“The back stage staff were also amazingly dedicated and caring people who deserve a lot more credit and recognition for making the show go so smoothly and making it an easy and enjoyable experience for contestants.

“I also got to meet the boxing word champion Carl Frampton and comedian Russell Kane who were fantastic to meet as well.”

If John performs exceptionally well during his time on the show, he may be asked back for the series finals which are scheduled to be filmed in October.

On whether he wins or loses though, he said: “From my point of view, just appearing on the show was a great success and is wildly exceeded my expectations.”
