A new push to promote Welshpool Town Hall as a wedding venue has been supported by councillors.

Couples can already get married inside the prominent Grade II-listed building which has recently renewed its marriage licence.

The licence means that weddings can be held inside the intimate Council Chamber, Assembly Room and the Corn Exchange.

Town councillors on Wednesday evening (July 20) agreed to support a 'try-before-you' advertising trial to promote the Town Hall as wedding venue with "world's number one" wedding planning app Bridebook.

The aim is to promote the Town Hall, Welshpool and local businesses to a wider audience and get a slice of the £14.7 billion UK wedding industry.

Anne Wilson, town clerk, told councillors: "The advantage on a 'try-before-you-buy' basis is that it promotes it further afield. People who want to get married travel and look what's around. We can try-before-you-buy and see how many people are interested."

Councillor Chris Davies added: "I think the Town Hall is definitely a location that people will find attractive to get married but I wouldn't know because I'm always the bridesmaid never the bride."

Councillors supported the proposal to go ahead with the try-before-you-buy scheme.

People can also hold their post-wedding parties there.

The hall offers an wooden-panelled civic suite inside the Council Chamber which is ideal for intimate wedding ceremonies which can seat up to 27 people.

The Assembly Room is situated upstairs in the Town Hall with a bar and can be used for weddings, dinners and public meetings, with seating available for up to 160 people. Then there's the Corn Exchange which has direct access to Broad Street.
