Fire crews spent almost an hour dealing with a grass fire in Powys this weekend as hot weather heightened the risk of fires.

Llanfair Caereinion Fire Service was called out do deal with the blaze near Adfa on Sunday, July 10, attending the scene at 12:25pm.

While it is unknown exactly what caused the fire, long spells of hot and dry weather can increase the risk of grass fires, with temperatures reaching a high point of 25 degrees Celsius at 12pm on Sunday when the fire broke out.

When the ground is extremely dry, grasslands and parks will burn quickly.

Approximately two acres of rushes and scrubland were destroyed by the fire before Llanfair Fire Service brought the blaze under control.

To control and extinguish the flames, fire crews used a hose reel jet and beaters. The fire service left the incident at 3.22pm.

Grass fires can spread extremely fast and can be started by the smallest spark, so the fire service encourages anyone who sees dry grass smouldering to call 999 and report it immediately so that firefighters can deal with it and prevent it from spreading.
