Newtown could be hosting a new 10K race next year if plans are given the go-ahead.

Open Newtown, which maintains the town’s large green public spaces, has shown its support for plans put forward by Welshpool 10k organiser Adrenaline Sports to bring a similar event in June 2023.

The race is expected to start and finish at the Back Lane car park, near the Riverside Community and Visitor Centre which is expected to open in July.

Stuart Owen, enterprise officer at Open Newtown, said the race would help promote the town’s natural beauty to visitors and locals taking part in the proposed event.

“I believe this event will be a very welcome addition to the local calendar," he said.

"Having met with Alan Lewis (Adrenaline Sports) and reviewed the most realistic route to accommodate the 10,000-metre run, beginning with wide roads and changing to riverside pathways as the pack thins out, we believe this would be the safest option and the most scenic option to promote Newtown’s many green and blue assets.

“I hope that Powys County Council Highways will agree and offer support as soon as possible so that firm plans may be put in place and the race promoted.”

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council will discuss the plans at an Economy and Environment meeting on Monday (July 4).

The Welshpool 10K saw hundreds of people take part in the event and line the streets earlier this year after it was delayed for the last two years due to the pandemic.

Newtown was well-known for hosting the Santa Run every December for several years which drew thousands of people to the town and help raised money for charities.
