Certain bus routes in Welshpool may be in jeopardy amid plans to change travel plans when the town's new transport interchange opens.

A new bus station is getting ready to open as part of Welshpool’s new transport interchange, and is seen by many as a positive addition to the town.

But Powys County Council will be reviewing certain bus routes around the town as part of the plans.

The bus routes affected will be the T12 and X75 services, which may no longer serve certain areas of Welshpool following the opening of the new bus shelter.

The T12 runs from Machynlleth to Oswestry, with stops around Gungrog Road and Mount Street, while the X75 links Rhayader to Shrewsbury, with stops also scheduled for similar locations.

The new plans, however, could mean the buses stop only at the new bus station.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “The council is not ending the T12 or X75 bus services, but they may not travel through Welshpool when the bus station at the town’s new transport interchange opens.

“However, the council needs to understand where passengers need to be dropped off before deciding and finalising any arrangements.”

To make this decision, the council will be using data obtained from ticketing machines on the buses.

This would include passenger numbers as well as the frequency of where buses stop, to determine any future arrangements.

While the exact nature of the changes to the services is unknown, they are likely to have an impact on those living within the affected areas, particularly those who rely on public transport.

Concerned resident Anthony Harvey said: “This area has already suffered a blow with the closing of Sainsbury and it seems that it will now suffer another with residents unable to easily access the two key bus routes.

“It should be remembered that this area of the town is home to many seniors and people without cars.

“No doubt the alternative which will be suggested will be to use the town bus to ferry passengers to the bus station.

“Almost certainly, unless there are two town buses, passengers will face a wait for connections at the bus station.

“Further the X75 provides the only public transport from Welshpool to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and if it no longer goes on its present route this will make it very difficult for many to use it to reach the hospital.

“Now is the time to contact your County Councillor and your AM before it is too late.”
