A PROFESSOR of Environmental Law from Machynlleth has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Lynda May Warren sat on the Government Committee on Radioactive Waste Management and is a Professor at Aberystwyth University and an Honorary Professor at Bangor University.

Professor John Williams from Aberystwyth Law School paid tribute to his fellow Professor and her accomplishments.

He said: “Lynda Warren was appointed to the chair in Environmental Law at Aberystwyth between 1996 and 2003.

“During that time she made a significant contribution to the teaching programme and research activity of the department.

“Her background in science and law made her ideally suited for this position. She was a founding editor of the Environmental Law Review as well as publishing many academic papers.

“In addition to her academic work, Lynda’s wider contribution to the work of public bodies and non-governmental organisations is truly impressive.

“These include board membership of the Environment Agency, and the British Geological Survey.

“Her commitment to the protection of the environment is shown by her work as chair of the South and West Wales Wildlife Trust. It is very pleasing that her services to environmental protection in the UK and abroad has been recognised in the Birthday Honours list.”

Professor Warren has postgraduate degrees in marine biology and law and has pursued careers in biology and environmental law.

Along with her many qualifications, she has more than 100 academic publications.

Professor Warren is also a board member at Natural Resources Wales, sits on Defra’s Science Advisory Council and was a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution until its closure in March 2011.
