THOUSANDS packed the streets for the colourful 2017 Newtown Carnival last weekend.

The parade was chock full of floats with entries coming in last minute from far and wide.

Carnival committee chair, Jen Reynolds, said: “It was an excellent carnival. From the comments we’ve had it has been the best we’ve had for years. People stayed all afternoon.”

The sun came with the carnival, but in true British summer style it was followed by some showers that came in at 4pm.

Yet the weather failed to dampen any spirits as hundreds of people continued to enjoy the festivities.

Mrs Reynolds added: “The band competition on Sunday was fantastic too. At the end of that there were 300 brass musicians who came together.

“I was quite surprised about how many people put floats in, I think there were about 18 by the end. Some were entered very last minute, we had two put in on Friday night.

“Lanidloes Carnival Queen and Rhayader Carnival Queen came too.

“A lot of work goes in to those floats and they were all excellent. They were followed by the committee dressed up as the Paw Patrol.

“The whole carnival showed a real community spirit.”

The 2017 carnival really packed out the town.

“There must have been a few thousand people there on the Saturday,” said Mrs Reynolds.

“There were people there from across the area, a couple of float entries came from Rhayader and Church Stretton. We have certainly drawn the crowds.”

Sending thanks to everyone who helped out, she added: “The committee behind everything is fantastic, we wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.

“You could name loads of people to thank, but I’d be here for weeks. The committee has been outstanding.

“So thank you to all of them and everyone who supported this year’s carnival.”
