Llansantffraid Village Cup Final
Caersws Reserves 3
CAERSWS Reserves triumphed over Meifod to lift the Llansantffraid Village Cup at Treflan on Sunday, prevailing 3-1 winners.
The Kings started the brighter and could have led inside the opening minute only for Abba Salahi to scuff his shot while Hywel Bennett also went close early on.
The pressure continued as Lewys Lewis released Arwyn Richards on the left wing whose cross was turned over the bar by Rob Evans while Salahi went close again moments later.
However the Bluebirds led on 35 minutes when Jimmy Jones headed home following a goalmouth scramble.
Caersws ended the half strongly with Meifod goalkeeper Martyn Langford keeping them at bay before Jack Williams’ deflected shot allowed the Bluebirds to double their lead.
Meifod were back in the game six minutes into the second-half as Phil Hughes drilled home.
Hughes led the Meifod fightback bid as Caersws were stretched, going close with a 20 yard free-kick while Salahi also threatened.
However Caersws nerves were settled by a controversial penalty awarded when Lewis was adjudged to have handled with Phil Jones netting from the spot.
Bluebirds spokesman Tony Harding praised the young side which upset the odds against the Honda Division One title chasers.
"A majority of the lads in the reserves this season are teenagers and deserve a lot of credit for their display," said Harding.
The sides will meet again the Robins Montgomeryshire League Cup semi-finals.
