Rhayader close on title as Tywyn fall by wayside

RHAYADER Town closed on the Spar Mid Wales League One title with a 4-1 victory at home to Tywyn Bryncrug on Friday night.

The Red Kites struggled to penetrate the visitors despite their dominance until the 38th minute when Gareth Hughes stabbed home Mark Davies’ corner.

However Tywyn were back on terms within seconds when Christian Jones saw red for handling in the area with Nick Williams converting the resulting penalty.

Ten man Rhayader toiled and regained their lead early in the second-half with Ashley Jones scrambling home.

Rhayader settled their hard fought victory as Tom Bethell curled home a free-kick from an acute angle before Ifan Burell met Mattie Lewis’ cross to head home and leave Rhayader on the verge of title glory.

Welshpool Town maintained their stirring end of season form with a 3-0 win at Radnor Valley.

The Lilywhites led on half-time when Ricky Litchfield went down in the area with Will Pritchard. converting from the spot.

Sam Evans doubled the lead from the edge of the area on the hour before Litchfield completed the tally and his side’s third win on the trot with a fine individual strike.

Bare bone Knighton Town returned from Tanllan with three hard fought points following a 2-1 win at Llanrhaeadr.

Sam Williams gave the Robins the edge before Iain Edmunds levelled for the hosts near the end of the first-half with Adam Farmer netting the winner for bare bones Knighton.

Elsewhere Tony Meredith was the match winner as Montgomery Town savoured a rare 1-0 victory over Hay St Marys to give caretaker manager Lee Jones his first win back at the helm.
