JAMES and Jean Potter were delighted with the finishes of their two runners on the opening of the Cheltenham Festival.

The Welshpool couple and owners of former Welsh National winner Mountainous, arrived at the world famous racing festival hoping other members of their stable would taste success.

Midnight Tour was a 100/1 outside in the championship race on day one, the Champion Hurdle, but finished a superb sixth in a race eventually won by Nicky Henderson's Buveur D'Air, his sixth success in the race.

In the final race of the day Two Taff's partly owned by the Potter's and Walters Plant Hire, went into the Novices Handicap steeple chase, hotly tipped at 9/1.

With Davy Russell on board, it finished third behind 8/1 winner Tully East.

At the time the County Times was going to press Top Gamble, co-owned by the Potter's and Walters Plant Hire and trained in Presteigne by Kerry Lee, was on the starting line for the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase.

The nine year old chestnut gelding had been ranked an  outsider with odds of 33/1 ahead of the race but exceeded expectations with a fourth place finish.
