ALEX Fletcher struck twice as Newtown hit back to leave basement side Airbus UK Broughton spiralling toward the Dafabet Welsh Premier trap door.

The midfielder underlined his progress in his debut campaign at Latham Park with a fine display capped with a brace of goals, while Jason Oswell and a rare Kieran Mills-Evans goal completed the fightback after the Wingmakers pressed the self destruct button with Obi Anoruo’s dismissal.

The Broughton side arrived knowing anything less than maximum points would all but cement their basement finish.

As such Ryan Fraughan volleyed over before Lee Owens outpaced the home defence to cross for Ryan Edwards who failed to best goalkeeper Jack Perry from close range.

The Robins soon got into the game and began to stretch the creaking Airbus defence as Neil Mitchell and Nick Rushton went close.

However on 25 minutes the Wingmakers led when Gray headed home from Edwards’ corner despite the best efforts of the packed home goalmouth.

Newtown responded within five minutes with a looping header from Oswell from Craig Williams’ left wing cross leaving goalkeeper Shaun Pearson stranded.

Newtown took the game to the rattled visitors with Rushton’s cross headed wide by Mitchell before taking the lead for the first time on 37 minutes with Fletcher opening his account with a glancing header from Luke Boundford’s cross.

It was a similar story after the break with Newtown threatening through Rushton before Mitchell crashed a shot off the woodwork in a lively start.

Fletcher completed his brace on the hour with a fine low drive from the edge of the area beyond Pearson after Shane Sutton's throughball had released Mitchell to square.

The Wingmakers looked to make changes with ex-Wrexham and Newtown loanee Obi Anoruo soon introduced and headed wide in a rare chance.

However with 10 minutes remaining Anoruo swung his elbow into the chest of Sutton to earn a straight red card and leave Airbus facing an uphill task.

The tiring Wingmakers were now taken apart at will by the rampant Robins with Oswell spurning two golden chances before Mills-Evans was on hand to turn home Ryan Kershaw’s right wing cross at the death.

There was still time for Airbus defender Leon Clowes’ swinging elbow to break the nose of Newtown substitute Joe Kenton but referee Mark Petch failed to issue any punishment.
