LLANIDLOES Sport Centre has become the latest in the county to unveil a new gym thanks to a £36,000 investment by operators Freedom Leisure.

Last Thursday, March 2, the new facilities were opened by local rally driver and regular centre user David Higgins, who cut the ribbon in the presence of local councillors and dignitaries.

Freedom Leisure, which operates the centre on behalf of Powys County Council, committed to the refurbishment upon winning the contract back in 2015, in order to ensure the centre meets the needs of the local community.

The refurb, which was completed just before Christmas, saw the gym area receive new flooring and the addition of air conditioning, while the area was extended in order to provide a far better functional training area.

New equipment was also added, including state-of-the-art cardiovascular TechnoGym kit.

Theresa Lloyd, Freedom Leisure Centre manager, said: “We are very proud of the new gym facility as it now has all the latest equipment required for a total body workout.

“The new gym has something for everyone in the local community, whatever their fitness level and ability, so from beginners, to advanced gym users, we urge locals to pop in and have a look at this wonderful new space.

“We were absolutely delighted that David could join us for the launch and agreed to open the facility, as a local sportsman he is an inspiration to many youngsters and a good example of how the provision of good quality local leisure facilities can support those pursuing a sporting career.”

In 2011 Higgins joined Subaru Rally Team USA in the Rally America series and won the title, with three wins from his first six events, setting a new record at the same time.

He has won the rally America championship eight times in total, in 2002, 2003, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

As a full member of the centre, he regularly uses both the gym and partakes in the fitness classes on offer as part of his fitness training. His children also use the centre often, including being part of the popular and successful swim school.
